This camera brought legions of new SLR camera owners to the joys of SLR photography back in its' day.
Yes, the Canon AE-1 was the first SLR that used a microprocessor CPU, but it is historically significant because it was the first SLR to sell so well. It sold 5 million units during the cameras' production run.
The Canon AE-1 uses a Canon FD breech-lock lens mount to accept any FD or FDn lens, but not with the later EF mount lens.
The battery (4LR44 or PX-28) controlled meter supported either manual exposure control or shutter priority auto exposure where you set the shutter speed and the meter chooses an aperture size.
There were over 40 Canon FD lenses available, plus a winder, speedlight (155A & 177A) and the Canon Databack for date stamping. the viewfinder was a split image rangefinder, which was standard for the day.
This is still a great camera for photographers that are starting out and want to learn how to do everything manually.
Canon also later made an AE-1 Program model.
