Canon AE-1 SLR Camera (1976-1984)

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2008

This camera brought legions of new SLR camera owners to the joys of SLR photography back in its' day.

Yes, the Canon AE-1 was the first SLR that used a microprocessor CPU, but it is historically significant because it was the first SLR to sell so well. It sold 5 million units during the cameras' production run.

The Canon AE-1 uses a Canon FD breech-lock lens mount to accept any FD or FDn lens, but not with the later EF mount lens.

The battery (4LR44 or PX-28) controlled meter supported either manual exposure control or shutter priority auto exposure where you set the shutter speed and the meter chooses an aperture size.

There were over 40 Canon FD lenses available, plus a winder, speedlight (155A & 177A) and the Canon Databack for date stamping. the viewfinder was a split image rangefinder, which was standard for the day.

This is still a great camera for photographers that are starting out and want to learn how to do everything manually.

Canon also later made an AE-1 Program model.

Nikon D60 Digital Camera

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2008

This is Nikon's entry-level DSLR camera the D60.

It is the 3rd generation of Nikon's compact, easy to use DSLR compact cameras to hit the market since 2006 and the D40 was introduced.

The D60 replaces the 2nd generation D40X and is a minor upgrade and almost looks the same outside.

Some of the new features are a dust reduction system, an eye sensor to control the screen display, auto rotating interface (for vertical shots), stop movie function, in camera RAW processing and the Nikon Expeed processing "concept" (don't even ask me to explain that one).

With this camera they did come out with a new optically stabilized lens kit (AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR). The D60 can use the lens in auto focus mode, but not in manual, since they left off the mechanical focus drive pin on the lens mount.
